Teaser Tuesday (Sept. 18)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

I stared at a leaf above me. It was so removed from the chaos. I wished I were the leaf, gently waving in the faint breeze, serene and calm on a Saturday afternoon.

I stared up at the leaf again as the sirens approached. In just minutes, it had become an anchor, a symbol of my hope. But as the sirens wailed closer and closer, a breeze stirred the jet-black smoke that poured from the wreckage. A cloud of smoke blew over the tree. My leaf was gone.
