Cozy Monday Culinary Theme Mystery List

Mondays are Cozy Mystery days here on A Date with a Book. Every Monday I will feature cozies by sharing a review, series highlight, or upcoming releases.

Definition of a Cozy Mystery: Cozy mysteries are a subgenre of crime fiction. There is less violence, sex, and profanity. The other attribute to a cozy is that the sleuth is an amateur and does not hold a position in the law enforcement community. Most times this sleuth is a female.

July is Culinary Arts Month so in recognition of cooks and chefs, here is a list of Culinary Themed Cozy Mysteries.

1. Diane Mott Davidson's - Goldy Bear Culinary Mystery Series
Featuring a caterer named Goldy Bear, this was one of my first culinary cozy mystery series. I've read several in the series and enjoyed them okay.

2. Joanne Fluke - Hannah Swensen Mystery Series
The sleuth is a cookie shop owner and includes several recipes. This is my all-time favorite series and culinary cozy series. Listed below are links to several of my reviews.
Series Wrap Up
Cinnamon Roll Murder
Devil's Food Cake Murder

3. Julie Hyzy - White House Chef Mystery Series
The sleuth is a cook inside the White House kitchen. These books are humorous and great reading. I love the characters created by the author. Listed below are links to reviews of the first five in the series.
Affairs of Steak
Buffalo West Wing
Hail to the Chef
Eggsecutive Orders
State of the Onion

4. Cleo Coyle - Coffeehouse Mystery Series
The sleuth is the owner of the coffee shop. While I did find this series as entertaining as others, there is something about them I enjoy as I continued to read through the series. Below are several of my reviews.
Murder Most Frothy
On What Grounds
Latte Trouble
Through the Grinder

5. Robin Allen - Poppy Markham Culinary Cop
The sleuth is a public health inspector who previously worked for her father as a sous chef in his restaurant. This new series is fun and entertaining with a whole cast of characters.
Out of the Frying Pan
Stick a Fork In It
If You Can't Stand the Heat

In my opinion, this is one of the largest themes found in Cozy Mysteries. Very enjoyable theme as it provides the author a lot of variety.

  1. Good list for culinary cozies. I'm not a big fan of the new trend toward paranormal cozies.
