Cozy Weekend Review ~ Mai Tai One On by Jill Landis

For the weekend we're heading to the north shore of Kauai to hook up with Em and the maidens at the Tiki Goddess Bar. Em returned back to Hawaii and the bar to help her Uncle get things back in order at the request of the maidens. At times it's a love/hate relationship between Em and the maidens, that's why there's Sophie. Em hired Sophie to help keep her sanity and also to help Sophie out at the bar.

A neighbor is found in the luau pit at the Goddess. Not wanting her Uncle to be suspected of murder, Em decides she needs to help Detective Roland solve the crime. Obviously while their paths are crossing during the course of the investigation, many see sparks flying between the two. We at least the maidens thinks so, but others are not so sure.

Characters: Several, developed well enough to picture them, but not be overwhelming. The cast of characters are funny and quite creative. My favorite, other than Em and Sophie, were Big and Little Estelle. A mother and daughter duo, but you’ll have to read the book to learn why they were titled “big” and “little”.

Location and Setting: This is the first cozy I've read where the location was Hawaii. I loved the cozy little location in a small part of Kauai. Most of the story happens at the bar, so not much is described through the rest of the town. Maybe in future installments. However, I do know that there is a lot of real estate for sale in this particular part of the Island.

Crime: The body is found at the beginning of the book which I tend to like, as it leaves the rest of the book for all the development. However, that is not the only crime which happens in this story and there is enough twist and turns to keep you guessing. Definitely had me hooked.

Romance: There’s definitely romance or the possibility of romance in a cozy and this book is no exception. However, the romance is very mild. Were there sparks flying between Roland and Em? If you ask the maidens, some some yes and some say no.

This book was a slow start for me, could have been my mood. But in the end, I do have to say I enjoyed this book. It’s really grown on me the longer its been since I finished reading it and put together the review.

Author Bio:
Jill Marie Landis was born in Clinton, Indiana, a small town on the Wabash River. My family moved to California when I was ten years old and my love affair with the Pacific Ocean began. I graduated from California State University at Long Beach with a degree in History and an Elementary Teaching Credential. That same year I married my college sweetheart. For thirteen years I taught kindergarten and English Second Language in Southern California. My husband coached high school football and taught English in Long Beach --which is why we have no children.

In the early '80's we both turned our vision to the arts. I began writing. My writing career began in 1988 with the publication of SUNFLOWER, my first book. (BOOKLIST, AWARDS, and BESTSELLER LIST)

I've written seventeen steamy historical romances which I am in the process of publishing in e-book formats, a trilogy of contemporary single title romances entitled the Twilight Cove Series, and five inspirational historical romances. Most recently I've been penning a series of comedic mysteries set on Kauai.

No matter what kind of novel I'm writing, I focus on creating memorable characters, adding the emotion my readers have come to expect, spinning page turning plots and adding the requisite happy endings.
